Plan-G / Re: VATSIM online traffic
December 02, 2010, 08:09:58 PM
Marco,

If you are using FSInn to connect to VATSIM, that may be the problem.  Using Squawkbox, I see online traffic in Plan-G, but not with FSInn.  I´ve been chasing this issue for a while now, and I´m closing in .....

Quite so.  I'll keep nibbling at it and let you know if I find the culprit.  Thanks Tim.

Yup - just checked yet again!  You know what it's like - I knew it was there, but had to go and look anyway.
#4
Lol, I can now type ipconfig variations blindfold! No, I'm afraid it's not that.

I don't believe so - under normal running I'd expect to get a message if anything was being blocked and AFAIK everything that should be an exception is listed.  But, just in case, I disabled all firewall stuff, but had the same result.

One thing - Plan-G seems to be connected to something although it times out trying to connect to FSX.  The Connect button is greyed out, with only Disconnect being offered.  Might that be significant?

Hiya, Tim - here you are:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?>
<SimBase.Document Type="SimConnect" version="1,0">
<Descr>SimConnect Server Configuration</Descr>
<Filename>SimConnect.xml</Filename>
  <SimConnect.Comm>
    <Disabled>False</Disabled>
    <Protocol>IPv4</Protocol>
    <Scope>global</Scope>
    <Address>192.168.2.2</Address>
    <MaxClients>64</MaxClients>
    <Port>4506</Port>
    <MaxRecvSize>4096</MaxRecvSize>
    <DisableNagle>False</DisableNagel>
  </SimConnect.Comm>
</SimBase.Document>

I´ve run out of ideas, so I´m taking a break before beating my brains out again later.  My problem is simple - I can´t connect Plan-G to FSX across my network, although FSInn does connect to FSX across the same two PC s. Not only that but both FSInn and Plan-G connect to FS9 (via FSUIPC/WideFS, I think), again on the same two machines.  Furthermore, Plan-G happily loads flight plans for both FS9 and FSX from the FS machine.

The Plan-G logfile records this for an attempted connection to FSX:

RibbonButton_Click_ConnectFS
17:48:09 SimConnect.Connect
17:48:09 SimConnect.Connect - Remote. Mode = IPv4 Server = 192.168.2.2 Port = 4506
17:48:29 SimConnect remote connection timed out

It seems that there´s no problem on the network side of things, nor with the Plan-G settings, so that leaves only FSX, as I see it.  (FSXSP2, by the way) I did create a SimConnect.xml file, as per the manual, and as short as possible, and I can´t see any errors in this. It has exactly the same settings as Plan-G.

I don´t think it´s relevant, as the machines are clearly happily talking to each other, but the FS machine is on XP and the Plan-G on Vista (UAC disarmed).

It would be wonderful if someone could suggest the silver bullet to sort this, or at least some areas to look at, otherwise it´s back to the drawing board   :(

Most of this is already in Plan-G Bruce.  You can create user waypoints with a right click on the map, then add them to your plan in various ways, and headings/distances between points are available in the plan expander pane.

This issue may now be resolved, at least partially.  In the Squawkbox Advanced Options, there is a setting "Skip FSUIPC TCAS table update". With this setting unticked, traffic is shown in Plan-G on my networked laptop, although there is no data for individual aircraft in the Traffic Expander columns Reg, From, and To.  In the a/c column, n/a appears in every case.

The sequence of opening programmes may also have an influence on what is displayed, but I want to test this a little more.

I've no idea what other implications there may be in ticking/ not ticking that particular SB option, except that the SB manual states that "SB fills the TCAS tables in FSUIPC so that third party software can get information about the planes in your vicinity".  As it was ticked (ie deactivated) by default, perhaps this should be in the Plan-G manual - I don't think it's there at the moment  ::)

Bump - in the hope that anyone has any suggestions, or spots something in the screenshot with my last post.  As you can tell, I've had no more ideas  :(

After a reinstall of SB, there's no change to the results.  Perhaps there may be some clues in the attached screenshot - meanwhile, back to my real job for now!

QuoteI cannot see online traffic with 0.8.1.389, but online traffic is visible with the earlier version 0.8.0.380.

I did not have traffic with build 380 either, but did no testing with that build.  My latest testing has produced more oddities, depending on configuration:

1.  With my normal setup of FS on one PC, SB and Plan-G on another, other a/c are visible in FS, but not in Plan-G.

2.  With FS, SB, Plan-G all running on the same machine there are no other a/c visible in FS, but they are shown in Plan-G.

3.  With FS and Plan-G on the same machine, SB on the other, I get the same result as 1. above.

In all cases, I'm referring to online traffic, not AI, by the way.

I'm now part way through uninstalling/reinstalling SB on both machines to see if this has an effect.

Well done, Parksy, happy flying!

My problem is a little different as the connection with Plan-G is clearly present - I get the weather, the instruments, my own aircraft, but not other traffic, although I see them in FS.  It´s strange that only those parameters appear not to be reaching Plan-G - why would that be?

Although I know that it´s not necessary to configure FSUIPC for Plan-G, I´ve gone through all the settings anyway, just to exclude them completely.  There may be some mileage from FSUIPC´s logging capability, but I´ll have to consult the manual first.

As I get the same results whether Plan-G is running on a network machine or the same PC as FS, I´ve excluded anything to do with the network or WideClient, and, as FS is correctly displaying other traffic, I´ve pretty well excluded FS as well, unless there is a rogue .dll that blocks the export of traffic data (but what could that be and why would that be desirable?).

Even though I don´t use Plan-G online as a moving map/traffic avoidance tool, I´d still like to get to the bottom of this in case anyone else has the same issue.

Any suggestions?

Traffic Explorer shows number of aircraft as 4 (at the top of the window), but only lists the details of mine.  At the same time, another online a/c is visible 200 feet away.  Out of curiosity, I ran Plan-G on my FS machine, and the traffic does not display in that config either.

My first question remains - what am I missing?

I´m not sure why I´m tugging at this particular bit of string - just hate a mystery, I guess!

There´s a manual with the free program, my friend.  I´m sure the answer to your question is in there. :)

Plan-G has hundreds of very happy users - I promise you it does what it claims to do.
