Plan-G / Re: Plan-G and OpusFSX Weather
October 21, 2012, 02:37:39 PM
Hi Tim,

Thanks for your reply.

This is the conclusion that I had come to as I was able to get weather reporting back when I added a couple of major airports to the plan.
Are there any plans to implement the ability for the software to locate the nearest weather stations and supply information about weather conditions en-route without including the stations as specific waypoints?

Cheers.

Further investigation would suggest that because my flightplan is to/from small UK aerodromes, Plan-G is not pulling enough local METARs from NOAA to accurately give me weather either at the departure aerodrome or anywhere along the route. OpusFSX also pulls its METAR data from NOAA, but has a much more extensive list of METAR strings, so they are available.

I guess this is one area of Plan-G that requires some additional and further development.

Plan-G / Plan-G and OpusFSX Weather
October 20, 2012, 09:04:50 AM
I have setup my flightplan and want to know what weather I will experience en-route, so while connected to FSX and using OpusFSX for weather depiction I open the Plan-G weather window. Despite pressing the refresh button several times, all I ever get is the weather at the departure aerodrome - nothing en-route. If I disconnect from FSX, and just try loading NWS weather, I don't get anything at all.

I have tried connecting to FSX via SimConnect and FSUIPC. I also have both options ticked for updating the weather when connected to FS in the Options section.

Any ideas why en-route weather is not being displayed?

Thanks

Ah ok, thanks for confirming that Tim.

Thanks Tim for what is a very concise, and very easy to understand explanation of these restricted airspaces.

My knowledge of real-world controlled airspace, MATZ penetration etc. is pretty much non-existant, but just armed with this small amount of knowledge now, I feel I can generate some flight plans that go along way towards being somewhat more realistic... cheers!

Would you happen to know, if I were to dig out a copy of MyTrafficX that I used to have and install it, would I see airliner class aircraft landing and departing at Heathrow/Gatwick/Luton/Stansted above this altitude and somewhat 'obeying' these controlled airspace altitudes? If not, don't worry.

As I understand it, a pilot is not allowed to fly VFR in Class A controlled airspace.

Am I right in understanding that around London there is the Class A 2500+ LONDON TMA 1 and what that basically means is that I can fly VFR in those areas as long as I am under 2500ft, i.e. 2500ft (and above) are considered controlled as Class A?

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the reply. No worries that Plan-G doesn't import a KMZ directly as a flightplan... I thought it probably wouldn't and was hoping that it would just be a visual guide so that I could re-plot the points by hand.  I'll hold my hand up and admit that I've not begun reading the manual yet (slap wrist), but I appreciate you pointing out that the map providers can be changed in the Options, something I wasn't aware of.

Now, let me see what's in those config files... :)

Regards,

Steve

Hi all,

I am completely new to flight planning, and quite frankly find the whole thing really daunting! However, I am very impressed at the extensive scope and apparent simplicity of Plan-G for the VFR flightplans I'd like to put together.

Not being familiar with the software's development history, I didn't realise that V3 would not be supporting Google satellite imagery. That is in no way an issue for me. But, I was hoping to use the software so that I could plot waypoints based on visual reference points on the satellite imagery in order to create some sightseeing tours for use with Gen-X photoscenery.

So, my question is this... can I use Google Earth to plot a route using satellite imagery, export a .KMZ file and import it into Plan-G to adjust and complete as a flight plan. I see that you can import .KMZ files into Plan-G, but will the result be for doing exactly what I'm trying to do above?

Any help or suggestions/comments/thoughts are appreciated.

Steve
