Plan-G / Re: Plan-G Map stopped opening up
March 04, 2014, 02:48:24 AM
Ahh!  Hadn't thought of that as an issue beforehand, but it makes sense now that you say it.  Yes, I had the user plane locked in the center of the map... and I also have the refresh rate set to "zero" seconds, so that the plane streams across the map in one continuous, fluid motion.  I like that look, it's slick and smooth looking, but I can see how over time it might take a hit.

So now I'm thinking maybe leave the map on "free", and back up the refresh rate of the user plane to 5-10 seconds, and maybe even remove the magenta breadcrumb trail... and I'll be giving myself more to work with-- as far as not stripping away valuable resources from the computer.

Thank you.

Plan-G / Re: Plan-G Map stopped opening up

Well... spoke a bit too soon.  About an hour of flying east from Seattle toward the Idaho state border, it happened just as I was getting ready to land at an airport.  Very similar failure codes... but of course the version of the map program is listed as different (as I'd expect), and note that both sig lines #4 & #9 vary between incidents 1 & 2.  Did I run out of memory on my computer?  Is this a cache size problem?  I'm wondering if line 4 is making reference to a microsoft core library?  Just a very uneducated guess on my part?

Your map program is excellent... I just need to get beyond these minor snafu's and figure out how to work around them... that's all.

Thanks again.

NEW EDIT:

Did just try something I overlooked before.  Just noticed that there's a setting for map tile caching.  It had been set to both "fetch locally" and "grab from the internet".  I'm going to presume that local grabs load maps quicker, but take up more room on my hard drive... whereas forced internet grabs take more time to resend the map tiles, but use less space.  Maybe that was the problem... presuming line 9 meant I was out of usable cache memory?  Just a thought, as I think out loud trying to solve this.

Plan-G / Plan-G Map stopped opening up
March 02, 2014, 10:23:00 AM
Hi,

Everything was fine last night for about an hour.  Then it started failing and shutting down after a spell.  I thought it strange, but restarted it... no problem.

Then I went to start it back up, the small intro screen in the center would key up, but then disappear, and nothing else would open up.  Reclicking on the icon created more mini-icons in the task bar but nothing opened.

Tried a restart... didn't help.
Tried an uninstall/reinstall.  That fixed the issue of opening and nothing happening, but then upon opening got this instead:

Don't know what this means.  Never had this problem until late last night/early this morning.

I run Windows 7 64-bit.  Just started using a 2nd monitor with #1 (principal) on the left, #2 on the right-- as you so instructed in one of your FAQ items.  Though I didn't use it in an exclusive "monitor 1 gets the sim, monitor 2 gets the map" scenario.  Instead, I used it in a "stretch monitor 1's image across both monitors" scenario for the sim, and then just laid a smaller (undocked) box of your map all the way to the right (to appear in monitor 2).  Can't believe this would have caused the problem, but I thought I should mention it anyway.

Any ideas... I'd appreciate the help.  Thanks,

=======================

EDIT:  Quite possibly disregard.  I had run several reinstalls of the older 3.0.xxx version (dated Oct-2013), but had not checked for updates until after I posted this.  Saw the new 3.1 dated 28-Feb-2014... downloaded, installed, followed all instructions about run as admin and proper file nesting for Windows 7 users... and it works.  At least the intro part.  If I run into further difficulties, I'll let you know, but in the meantime, let's assume "problem solved", and table this discussion for the time being.

Sorry to have bothered you.

I ran the sim with the map with AI Traffic turned on.  I see AI planes indicated as red on the taxiways of the airport I'm taking off from.  However, the map will not show them taking off, nor when I set their bread crumb trail to be turned on, will they display their trails.

Am I doing something wrong?  Thanks.

Plan-G / Which Should be Started on my computer first?
January 18, 2014, 08:34:56 AM
Hi,

Which should be started on my computer first?  MSFS?  Or Plan-G Map?  Or does it not matter one way or the other?

Thanks,

EDIT:  Hah... look at the time I originally posted this post-- all sequential HH:MM:SS in numerical order.  I couldn't do that again if I tried!

Plan-G / Main Tabs: View --> Plan Question
January 20, 2013, 09:18:43 AM
As noted in the PDF manual-- section 12.3 page 49 of 128--

It says that the Tabular flight plan menu automatically displays in an open state... blank with a brown border line, when the program is first installed.  I seem to recall seeing it, but not knowing what I was doing, I apparently X'ed it out or shoved it off to the side somewhere so I could mainly concentrate on the map.  Now that I've saved a flight plan and I'm ready to try it out, I want to see it back and when I click on the Plan button, the flight plan window is not opening up; or if it is, it's not visible.

Is there an easy explanation to what may have happened?  Also the same thing appears to maybe have happened with the "Plan Elevation" button... because I went on the DEM website, downloaded all the tiles (just to play it safe and complete), and installed all those in the "Documents/Plan-G Files/DEM" folder, but I'm not able to get the plan elevation profile window to open up either.

What might I be doing wrong?

Or does FS have to be powered up and ready to go as I'm attempting to do all this?  (Right now... I only have Plan-G opened up, as I thought flight planning could be done w/o the sim itself running.

Thank you.

Yeah, V2 is no longer supported.  Which means it is no longer available to purchase and or register.
Okay thanks.  That's what I would have guessed, but I wanted to double-check to make sure.

Plan-G / Location for Flight Plan (.plg) Files
January 20, 2013, 08:40:46 AM
When I go to save a flight plan I've created, it gives me the option to put it anywhere I'd like, but is there a place where it works best from?

Right now it wants to put it into my Documents/Plan-G Files folder, but it wants to sit it loose in that folder w/o putting it in any of the specific sub folders.

Should it go in either the Charts, Data, Profiles, Trail, Vatsim, or WX folders; or just leave it loose sitting out on its own?

Plan-G / No great circle routing in Quick Planner?
January 19, 2013, 02:10:52 PM
I tried a Quick Planner route from San Francisco to Baghdad, Iraq just to see if it would yield the proper great circle route over the pole (and/or very close to it), and instead it directed me straight across the U.S., Atlantic, Northern Africa, and into the Middle East... as though it was assuming a flat world.  Is this a known bug in the program, or since its primary design is for short flight VFR usage, it's presumed that I must find the proper way points to create a polar route on my own?  I'm kinda' new to all this, so I'm still getting the hang of it.

Thanks,

Plan-G / Re: V2 vs V3

So if I just discovered Plan-G within this past week, and I started with a download of v3, is it possible for me to get a version of v2 also?  Or is it a case of... I've started with v3, so I must move up from that point forward?

Plan-G / Breadcrumb Trail Color-- It won't change
January 15, 2013, 07:40:20 PM
If I go into the File --> Options --> User Aircraft... Breadcrumb Trail selection box and try to change the colour of the trail from default "magenta", to anything else, it appears to not change.  Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong that I'm missing?

Thanks,

I second this question.  I crashed on takeoff, and the path into the water (on the first unsuccessful takeoff) is still loaded on the map upon my second takeoff attempt.

Is there a "clear the breadcrumb trail" selection, in order to "unclutter the map"?  (Thanks and I hope this isn't considered "hijacking the thread".  The Op's subject seemed so closely related, it seemed silly to start a new thread just to basically ask the same question).

Thanks,
