Hello Tim,

First of all, this is not a request for myself but for a literary old friend who would like to use Plan-G in a quite limited region but does not have permanent access to the internet. I know that your helpful application is not designed for off-line use, however, possibly there is a trick to circumvent at least the one or other restriction. A test today has shown, that Plan-G could work off-line once it has loaded the map tiles of a specific region. The disturbing fact is that it "forgets" everything once it is closed or booting again even if the option "local cache only" is ticked.

  • Is it possible to save the content of the cache before closing Plan-G (and if yes, where can I find it)?
  • Could those tiles be "re-used" before or after the proggy booted again?
  • Would it be possible adding a function like "store cache" or similar (like in SbuilderX)?
  • If the answer is "no" (for what reason ever), would it be possible to switch over to a white background in order to achieve a sufficient contrast to the still existing flight sim data layer? This would open the possibility using the data that have been collected from FS.

What provider were you using, and have you tried a different one?

The cache definitely should be saved between sessions, certainly it is for me - I use Plan-G extensively in "cache only" mode, particularly when demoing it at shows and so on, where there's no internet connection. It survives many reboots.

The cache is in AppData\Local\GMap.NET\TileDBv5\en\Data.gmdb it's in SqLite format.

It was 'Map Quest OSM'. Now the guy is gone with his notebook but I will check this out with my own installation.
Are you using different map zoom levels in order to cover a single area? I just had one and panned around in S-turns in order to load the desired region without changing the zoom level in Plan-G. The message on the tiles just told me that there are no maps in the selected zoom level available.

While writing this, I tested it and my suspicion was obviously correct. Thanks for the information Tim.

I just sweep the map so the tiles are drawn in the area I want, then repeat for each zoom level I want.

It's important to remember that if you don't see it on the screen it doesn't go in the cache. There's no backfilling of other zoom levels or other providers - that would be a breach of their TOS.
