I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway: is there a way to see the moving map and fly at the same time on a single computer with a single monitor?

Run FS in windowed mode, and <ALT><TAB> back and forth between the two programs. Is that what you meant?

Unfortunately, Plan-G will not "float" above a full-screen FS window. The best is to run Plan-G on a networked computer or a second monitor.
