Rebuilding Database causes screen blackouts

Whenever I rebuild the (FSX) database, during the fairly long process the monitor screen goes black for a few seconds and often a message appears saying (in effect) that the video card (ATi Radeon HD5850) has shut down. This occurs every minute or so until the rebuilding has been completed.
All I can do is go away and do something else until the rebuild is finished.
Is this a common problem with other users of Plan-G? Or is there something wrong with my video setup?
Would this be connected somehow with the very slow redrawing of the map and the fleeting nature of pop-ups when mousing over, e.g.airports or VORs?
Otherwise Plan-G is a super program and quite invaluable!

There have been one or two other reports of similar things, but I've never had it happen here, and we haven't managed to track down a cause.

I presume you've checked your AIT drivers are up to date?
