Can't seem to do anything, am I just an idiot?

I installed Plan-G on a networked laptop, everything is set up ok.

I can connect to FSX, can also make the database.

When I am connected to FSX, I can see my aircraft on the map, I can see AI traffic and I can see VOR symbols. But that's it. I cannot actually do anything. No airports show up, and if I try to use "Find" function for airport, I get nothing. The filters show City (0) State (0) Country (0). I cannot create a flight plan as it does not seem to see anything other than VORs.

My log shows that it has found all the installed scenery ok. Strangely though, when I open either the Plan-G.mdb file or the _Plan-G.mdb file, there is no data in either of them.

Thinking this might be caused by a network problem I then installed Plan-G on my machine which runs FSX, but the results are exactly the same.

It's obvious I am doing something very wrong, but what? Documentation will be a huge help for idiots like me when it's ready  :D

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check the end of the log to see if there are any errors when actually writing the data out. This happens after all the folders have been scanned. The VORs, NDBs and airspaces are written before the airports, so check that those can be seen, and are in their Find dialogs. You should also have seen an extended progress bar while it was writing the airport data - it takes a good couple of minutes to write 24000 airport records. Finally, the Plan-G.mdb file should be between around 30 and 50MB, depending on whether you've built data for FS9, FSX or both.

Checked the logs on both machines and found the following:

On laptop connected over network, log reports a lot of errors, which seem to be due to the fact that my scenery files are not in the same location as the FSX folder (except for ORBX). The scenery.cfg points to drive E:\ on the server pc, and although this drive is mapped and assigned to Plan_G via Locations, it seems to be searching for Drive E on the client machine and not finding it.

On the PC where FSX is installed, Plan-G successfully finds everything, but is only writing the VORs to the database - no airports or NDBs. The .mdb files are only 524 and 648 Kb respectively, so obviously something is amiss here.
Here is the relevant extract from the log:

Sorry to bother you again Tim, but have you any idea how I can get Plan-G to load the airports into the database? As you can see from above log extract, it is only loading VORs, but there are no airports being loaded.

Thanks
Jack

Hello Jack.

Like yourself, I cannot get Plan-G to do anything. Other people manage to use it okay so I am assuming I must be missing something. I have managed to load all the Flightsim data and the info all shows up on the screen. My problem is a lack of understanding as to what happens next. I have clicked on all the menu options at the top of the screen but nothing happens. I am expecting some sort of flightplan window to open or something to happen but nothing.

I have tried with and without Flightsim connected. Any advice Tim?

Hmm. Assuming it's written all 9571 VORs (and it would log an error if it didn't), I can't see any reason why it wouldn't go on to write the NDBs, airspace and airports.

Where have you installed it, and what version/language of Windows are you using?

Right click on an airport ans select "Start Flight Plan at <wherever>"

Right click on another airport, VOR etc, and select "add to flight plan"

etc

You can also open the Plan expander on the right side of the window, and right-click in that too to add, change etc waypoints

Hi Tim.

Boy that must be about the fastest answer I have ever had. Thanks for that.

Hi Tim,

I have installed Plan-G on 2 pc's - on the pc where FSX is installed, and on a networked laptop. I did the installation on the FSX pc only when I couldn't get any database installed on the laptop.

On the FSX pc Plan-G is installed in its own folder on drive F:, while FSX is in drive:E. I'm running Vista Home Premium, 32 bit, German language version, but FSX is English language version, with Acceleration installed. running everything as administrator and have UAC switched off.

I successfully imported the OZx fields data and they show up ok along with the VORs, but as said, none of the base FSX data nor the NDBs are showing and the mdb files are very small.

I just tried creating a database again, but with the same result.

Cheers
Jack
