I'm a lazy pilot, too. Otherwise I wouldn't use flight planner software  :)

Other software I have used (Aeroplan, Navigation) had this feature where the elevation profile of your current leg (or track) could be optionally displayed. Quite useful in Switzerland and British Columbia, to keep from scraping your belly on the rocks.

Sort of a Terrain Avoidance system.

Would this be useful? Do-able?

There's no code available to read the FS DEM directly, and SimConnect doesn't have an 'Elevation at lat/lon' function. While there is a public domain 1.2km DEM available (1.2km is good enough for planning purposes), it amounts to several GB download in about 16 chunks, which is not ideal (plus the download site, like many academic sites, is not designed with ease of access in mind).

It should be possible to display an after flight vertical profile though, since this information is recorded with the breadcrumb telemetry.
