I downloaded the DEM of the area where I am flying for this test (Latinamerica) and installed it in the DEM directory in unpacked form (not .GZ).

I enabled the Plan Elevation checkbox, am connected to FSX via SimConnect to my remote PC. However, the elevation profile shows nothing, it is not tracking the profile.

Does this means that this feature only works IF you have a flight plan? at this moment (testing) I had no flight plan, simply put the C208B to cruise on a particular heading at a cruise altitude. It is tracking the a/c but not the vertical profile (elevation).

Would be nice if it worked without flight plan, after all the application can get both the ground and aircraft elevation via SimConnect.

Yes, the Plan Elevation Profile requires a plan. It does not require you to be connected to FS

The elevation plot in the Trail viewer is based on altitude and height data recorded during the flight.

The DEM elevation map will also give you the spot height if you right-click and select Create User Waypoint.
