Fairly new to FSX and the addition of your Plan G functionality is just great. Many thanks for all your work and making this available.

I have had it running for a few days now with FSX on my main PC and no problems. This PC has Windows 7 16bit.

I have tried to set it up on my laptop which is Vista 32bit but it cannot locate the database in FSX on the PC. I followed the manual using SimConnect and created the required xml file in the FSX directory as follows,

Can't see anything obviously wrong. You've checked that't the IP address of the FS pc and not the laptop? You don't say what is the OS of the laptop: Is that W7 too? Have you been able to connect using IPv4?

Yes I have checked the IP and it is the PC running FSX.
I did mention that the Laptop was running Vista 32bit.

I have now tried IPv4 and I have been able to load the databases, so that is considerable progress and I thought I (or you) had cracked it.

However I am now getting a message about "unable to connect (timeout) check FSX running and that protocol settings are correct"
FSX is running.
I have created a Flight Plan in Plan-G but this does not appear if I try to Load it in FSX. The same is true if I create one in FSX, it does not appear in Plan-G

I have also tried disabling the firewalls on both computers but no difference.

Is UAC off? Run As Administrator?

Hi Tim

Not sure about your Antivirus question but I run AVG

UAC is off and both Pc's are running as Administrator.

Plan-G is writing the Flight Plans I create in a Flight Simulator X Files folder on the Portable and they are not passed to the equivalent folder on the FSX PC.

Here are the last few lines in the log file if any use, not sure what the last line means?

Ok, basic networking question: From the Laptop, using Windows Explorer, can you access and open the FSX PC's Flight Simulator X Files folder?

If so, make a note of the path (at the top of the window. Right Click on it an select Copy Path as Text. You'll then get something like this, if you paste it into Notepad: N:\Flight Simulator X Files) I have mapped drive N to be the "My Documents" folder on my other PC. This is the path you will need to use for opening and saving flight plans in Plan-G.

If you can't navigate to the FSX PC's Flight Simulator X Files folder using Windows Explorer, check that that folder is shared on the FSX PC.

Hello again

You are getting a bit beyond my knowledge.

I can access/open the Flight Simulator X Files on the FSX PC from my Vista Portable.

I have made a note of the path as you outline.

This is where I struggle.

I have created a mapped  N drive with the path to the folder (Is this just to My Documents or to the Sim X Files folder?) on the FSX PC and I can see this linked to the FSX PC under explorer. If I click on this mapped drive it opens up the FSX PC Sim X Folder.

I cannot see it from the Vista Portable.

How do I get Plan-G to write/read to this drive?

Sorry for not being to clear about what needs to be done.

ON THE FSX PC
------------------

* Open Windows Explorer
* Click on My Documents (in Win7 that's Libraries -> Documents -> My Documents) to highlight the folder
* In the menu bar at the top of the Explorer window, select Share With, and choose 'Specific People' (the bottom option)
* Where it says Choose People to share with, type into the box "Everyone" (capital E. 'Everyone' is a special Windows user name that lets you share stuff with, well, everyone), and click on Add.
* You should see 'Everyone' added to the list.
* Click under permission level for Everyone, and select Read/Write (by default, you will only be allowed to read files, which means you could open a flight plan across the network, but not save it)
* Now click on Share, and you're done.


ON THE LAPTOP
------------------
* It may take a few minutes for the laptop to notice the folder has been shared, so either make a cuppa, or reboot both PCs to expedite the process
* Open Windows Explorer and click on Network
* You should see the PCs on your network listed. Find the FSX PC and click on it.
* You will get a list of shared folders: You should see 'Documents' in that list.
* Open the Documents folder, and you will see Flight Simulator X files, plus whatever else you have in My Documents


To load and save in Plan-G, all you need to do in the Open or Save dialogs is, click on Network, and follow the same steps that you've just done.

TO MAP A NETWORK DRIVE:
--------------------------------
Again, on the laptop:

* Click on Computer
* In the menu at the top of Windows Explorer, select Map Network Drive
* Pick a drive letter ( e.g. N: )
* Click the Browse button
* Click on Network, and then follow the steps above again
* Once you've navigated to the Documents folder, click OK, and you're done.

Now, in Plan-G, to open or save flight plans, just navigate to N:\Flight Simulator Files

Once you've done it once, Plan-G will remember it for the next time.

Thanks for all of that.

I had carried out the first 2 tasks to get the FSX and Plan-G folders shared by Everyone.

It was the Mapping bit I was not sure of and thanks for the explanation.

I now have the Flight Plans avaible in FSx and Plan-G.

Unfortunately I still have the timeout problem and though I can fly the FP from Plan-G nothing happens on the map.

Don't worry about that -- that's just telling me what it's doing after the timeout. The reason it's timing out and not connecting, has to be that one of the numbers is wrong somewhere. I'm afraid it's a matter of double, triple, quadrouple checking. Some PCs have two network ports on the back; each port will have a different address - check you are using the right one, etc.
