Export flightplan to MSFS?

Post by bigmarty »

Good afternoon. I have installed the new version of Plan g and use it with MSFS.

I make a flightplan - departure and destination airports and some waypoints. Then click on the Export MSFS tab. I transfer the .pln file to MSFS Localstate in the Community Folder. With MSFS loaded, the file comes up in the Load/Save option but it does not load correctly into the aircraft (Garmin 750 and Garmin 530 installed in aircraft). The plan will load sometimes with the waypoints changed to User1, User2 etc, and sometimes does not load at all. I can enter the waypoints manually into Garmin in the aircraft.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks for any help.
Martin
PS - I am using Plan g on a remote PC so I send the flightplan to myself via email so I have it on the MSFS pc. Don't know if this is important.

Is the database on your remote PC up to date? MS update the navdata with every world or sim update. If you get too far out of date your plans can go awry (same applies if you have the database active for a different sim).

Next, how are you creating the flight plan? Are you clicking things on the map? or typing waypoints in the QuickPlan dialog? for example. If you're clicking on the map, it's possible if the map is cluttered that you've selected something other than what you thought you'd selected. You can look at the Flight Plan table view before exporting to confirm that the plan is actually what you expect it to be.

(airports and naiads will have names and idents and frequencies filled in for example, while user waypoints will show blank cells in the table. If you find you're accidentally getting user waypoints in the plan, try zooming in the map, or decluttering it (if you're connected to the sim an displaying AI aircraft, clicking on one of those is a good way to not get the waypoint you wanted, for example).

Thank you for the reply.

I rebuilt the same flightplan using the pc where MSFS is located. When I load the flightplan into MSFS the waypoints are shown on the world map, but in the aircraft the waypoints appear as Usr01 etc.

A couple of screen grabs are attached showing this.

The aircraft will follow the flightplan ok, but it would be a problem if ATC directed me to "go direct to".

Two previous versions of Plan g are still located on the flightsim pc and the remote pc. I will try with the previous version and see if I get the same issue.
Thanks again for your help.

Update - I rebuilt the same flightplan using an older version of Plan g on the pc where MSFS is located, exported it in MSFS format, with the same result in the sim. It is notable that the flightplan waypoints etc. are correctly shown in the MSFS navlog, but not on the Garmin systems.

This is more likely a Garmin issue than Plan g, I am thinking.

I don't have the GTN750, so it's possible there's something quirky about it.

- Are you loading the flightplan from within the aircraft, of in the main MSFS UI?

- Does the flightplan load correctly in the MSFS main map screen?

- If you export from Plan-G in Garmin GTN format, can the 750 open it? and if so is it correct?

- Have you tried creating the flightplan inside the 750 itself, and if so does it let you assign an intersection?

Thanks again for looking into this.

- I have tried loading the flightplan at the startup screen (load/save) before the aircraft is loaded up and also after the aircraft is up and running with the same result. In the Garmin 750 there is an "import fp from ATC" button and this brings in the fp but still showing waypoints as Usr01 etc.

- The flightplan shows correctly on the MSFS world map.

- I tried exporting in the Garmin GTN format but MSFS does not recognize the file.

- Yes the flightplan can be input correctly iniside the GTN 750.

Hope this helps.

The GTN format file would need to be loaded directly by the Garmin unit (in previous sims the third party Garmins actually ran Garmin software. I don't know what they do in MSFS). Fore sure MSFS itself won't understand it.

Could you attach the .pln file you're using here and I'll take a look at it, see if I can figure out what's happening. It might be a while though, as my PC is poorly at the moment (and I can't run MSFS from a Mac!)

Ok, I've managed to reproduce the problem. I'll look into what the issue is...
