I have searched carefully as I don't want to waste support time but I cannot find a way to delete the trails.
How is this done?

If you mean the user aircraft trail, you can go into Options -> User Aircraft -> Breadcrumb Trail, and click Clear.
If you mean traffic/AI trails, go into Options -> Traffic, and set Breadcrumb Trail to None. The existing trails will time out after a while (you can also disconnect and reconnect to the sim, which will reset the traffic).

I don't know how I missed the "Clear" option.
