No data being shown

Post by jsearl98 »

I have downloaded the new version, built the database (which looks fine) but no airports, VORs etc. being displayed. Selecting "search" (magnifying glass), grid is blank. I attach the log file.

The problem here is it's running out of memory. Due to the way than MSFS stores airport data, it generates far more data than Plan-G can handle (because it's a 32-bit app, and there are hard-coded limits to the number of elements in an array. It doesn't actually run out of memory - there's still plenty of memory in the system (unless you actually have very little memory), but it hits this limit for the size of an array. In particular, it's caused by airport aprons. MSFS defines literally everything on the ground as an apron, whether it's a parking ramp, a taxiway, or even a random bit of grassy/rocky/whatever hillside. Millions of them. An there's no way to tell what's a useful 'ramp' as FSX or P3D or X-Plane would define it, and what's just a random bit of ground.

The ultimate solution is to rewrite Plan-G as a 64-bit app, where this limit doesn't exist. But this is very non-trivial, since it wouldn't work with the 32-bit simulators (FSX, P3Dv4, X-Plane 10 etc, for which I still have many users). And that means creating and maintaining two versions of the app...

The short term silution, unfortunately, is to create less data. And that means taking out some of your addons. The two big ones uou have are Navigraph and WorldOfJetways. Navigraph should be fine - I have it installed myself. I don't have WorldOfJetways, so I don't know what it provides that may be beneficial to Plan-G - additional parking positions maybe? But that's the first place I'd start: drag it out of your community folder, build the database, and then put it back before you next run the sim.

Long term, a 64-bit version of Plan-G is on the roadmap. And in the shorter term I may be able to provide some data reduction options (like "no aprons"), which could help.

But yeah, thank Microsoft's 2 million array limit (ie a signed 32-bit int)

Tim,

You provided this link to a database when I had this problems before: https://www.dropbox.com/s/o7xt4vqcwlpzz ... S.zip?dl=0

The file at this link will no longer download. Can you send it again somehow?

This includes the new World Update (UK) - I built it about 10 minutes ago.

Thanks for that Tim, but I still dont have any data in Plan-G. I deleted my existing Plan-G folders, downloaded it again from your website. Unzipped the program to the my Documents folder, started Plan-G and ran the data base creator and then closed Plan-G. I then downloaded and unzipped the folder you uploaded and replaced the data base file created in folder Documents/Plan-Gv4 Files with the unzipped database file. Ran Plan-G but still no airport, VOR etc. data being shown.

Also Tim, when I run the database creator, it creates a file which is more or less the same size as the one you uploaded.

Did you also activate the database? Just building a database or copying the files over won't make it the active database: you also need to tell Plan-G which of the possible 5 databases to use.
